Large trees being planted in clay soils should be planted 2-4" above the existing grade to prevent pooling of water in the roots. Do not dig the hole any deeper than the dimensions given.
BALL AND BURLAP
This must be planted just as you receive it; burlap, rope, and wire too! Fill in around the ball with 2/3 of your existing soil, and mixed 1/3 compost plus soil. Water well.
FIBER POT
We cannot overstress the importance of LEAVING THE POT ON!!!!! These pots are made of paper and will rot away. They are easily penetrated by the roots. Dig your hole no deeper than the pot's height. Fill in around the pot with compost plus mixed with existing soil. Water well.
PLASTIC POTS
Water thoroughly and remove from pot. The roots have been confined by the pot and should be loosened by gently tugging the root mass.
WATERING AND AFTERCARE
Water plants well after planting. Water approximately once per week thereafter, depending on the weather. Use bone meal after the specimen is planted. Fertilizing can be done every six weeks beginning in May through the second week in July. Do not fertilize any later than this! In the fall be sure to water evergreens well before freezing weather. Cover the root ball with 1-1/2" of mulch. If the plant is young and deciduous make sure to cover the trunk with a plastic wrap. This will prevent the rodents from eating the bark. Remove the plastic wrap in the Spring.
Each outdoor plant, tree and shrub has their own specific requirements for fertilizer, watering and light. Make sure to check the soil to see when the plant needs water, and don‘t forget to feed your plants! Your trees, shrubs, perennials, and culinary garden need fertilizing three times annually for optimum growth! Give your soil a test analysis to reveal what its missing in content (nutrient, minerals, acidity) and get your fertilizer or soil treatment accordingly!
For harsh winters it is ideal to prep your sensitive trees and shrubs before it gets cold. Materials that can be wrapped around these trees and shrubs are burlap or hay. Sensitive trees and shrubs are those indicated as being within or above zone 5. Such as, Emerald Cedars, Japanese Cherry Trees, Japanese Maple Trees, and so on. Also protect the trunk of your tree with rodent guards. Rabbits love burning bush, willow, Japanese maple and fruit trees. Use dormant oil on your fruit trees in February or March to prevent over wintering insects.
Yes, many trees—cedars included— will gain brown spots on their leaves during the fall. The cedar is okay and without problems in these instances. It is a natural occurrence to be expected in the fall and will be gone, turning back to green in no time. The only reason for concern is when the top of the tree is brown.
The bloom time depends on the type of hydrangea. Make sure the Hydrangea has the right conditions in terms of sun and water. When fertilizing use one that's high in phosphors and calcium to make the plant focus on blooming. A fertilizer high in nitrogen will mainly make the plant focus on producing leaves, so avoid that. You can use our Hydrangea, Azaleas, Rhodendrons & Acid Loving Plants Fertilizer.
Overseeding is the process of sowing grass seed into an existing lawn.
The early spring and the early fall (i.e., early September) are the best times to overseed.
