 The Canadian elderberry, commonly known as Canada elderberry or American elderberry, is a fast-growing native shrub prized for its edible berries, ornamental flowers, and exceptional wildlife value. Native to much of Ontario and eastern North America, elderberries have long been used by Indigenous peoples and settlers for food, medicine, syrups, wines, and preserves. In early summer, the plant produces large flat clusters of fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators and beneficial insects. These are followed by heavy clusters of small dark purple-black berries in late summer. The berries must be cooked before consumption and are highly valued for jams, pies, juice, wine, and immune-supporting syrups. Canadian elderberry shrubs are vigorous, adaptable, and highly productive once established, spreading naturally through suckering and forming dense habitat for birds and pollinators.

Pollination: Canadian elderberries are partially self-fertile, but planting two genetically different elderberry varieties nearby greatly improves pollination, berry size, and yields.
